Dr Shamil Jeppie, senior lecturer in the department of Historical Studies at the University of Cape Town was invaluable as a historical consultant on the documentary project. His research of the legal contents of the manuscripts is included in interviews with research student Mohammed Shahid Matthee.

The Scribes of Timbuktu project worked in collaboration with the Institut des Hautes Etudes et de Recherche Islamique Ahmed Baba, Abdel Kader Haidara from the Bibliotheque Commemorative Mamma Haidara, Ismael Diadié Haidara from the Fondo Kati Library, the Djingarey-Ber Mosque and Sankore Mosques in Timbuktu.

Research astrophysicist Dr Thebe Medupe working in collaboration with Dr Petra Schmidl carried out the astronomy content research featured in the film.

International consultants are Dr John Steele, a specialist in the history of astronomy and Prof George Saliba, professor of Arabic and Islamic Science.
